When Did the Crickets Return?

Crickets!

Were they already here?

I sat solitary and intentionally listened

For the first time this year

To their low, long, slow song of consistency

A bird spoke up

Then a few more

Getting the last of their thoughts out

And as the sun set

A group of returning geese began to honk

Once the sky was purple

Their voices rising deep and urgent staccato

Against the cricket hum.

I thought of us

Newly us

Alone in the woods

Untying the knots

Of our complicated lives.

Slow down my love. Come sit with me again.
